Statement on Boulder, CO
We are horrified by the attack in Boulder, CO, where gasoline and a Molotov cocktail were reportedly thrown at participants in a “Run For Their Lives” event for Israeli hostages, injuring several people.
This follows:
The deadly antisemitic shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum, carried out in the name of “Free Palestine”
The firebombing of a Jewish governor’s home on Passover
A surge in antisemitic violence targeting Jews in public spaces and houses of worship
Let’s be clear: when Jews are targeted to protest Israel’s actions, it is antisemitism—plain and simple. There is no question that there is a clear line between the rhetoric heard at the ongoing Anti-Zionist led protests and the violent attacks seen on the streets around the USA.
Here in Montclair, we have seen these same disturbing patterns. The Montclair Jewish Community Relations Council (MJCRC) is working to confront this danger locally. We are alarmed by the spread of antisemitic rhetoric in our own community—from public protests to statements by local officials.
At the same time, we remain profoundly grateful to live in a community where so many stand for justice, safety, and inclusion. Montclair has long been a place where people of all backgrounds come together—and that’s something we will continue to protect and build upon. Now more than ever, those who believe in compassion, in belonging, in the worth of every person, must raise their voices against antisemitism—firmly, clearly, and without delay.
To the Jewish members of our community: if you are feeling afraid, isolated, or unsettled in this moment, please know you are not alone. There is a place for you at MJCRC. We are here. We will listen. And we will stand with you.
